A Cup for cricketing world … 2011. Pre-tournament analysis

Sharing old document on World Cup cricket 2011… Cricket World Cup 2011 It is less than a year from now for the toss to go up at Sher-e-Bangla stadium to decide which team bats first in the 10th cricket world cup. The mega event returns to the subcontinent once again. The cricket world cup 2011, jointly organized by the boards of India, Srilanka, and Bangladesh, is set to electrify lovers of cricket with no single team emerging as the clear favorite and given the track record of the previous world cups, it’s premature to arrive at a team at this point. ODI Cricket world cup (CWC) is still the hottest prize despite the T20 format making inroads into what was once a mere game now turned into a religious festival often teased by political interests. Globalization of the game appears to have discounted originality of the game but spectators have their own reasons to cheer about! Sticking to basics, discipline, thinking, nerves of steel, and a slice of luck are what any team needs to outsmart better teams at crucial stages. No ‘Supers’! Skippers, relax a bit….. The game’s governing council introduced the concept of ‘super 6’ and ‘super 8’ in 1999, 2003 and 2007 to see that teams and captains think a lot before employing a tactic. The result of 1999 world cup semifinal thriller between Australia and South Africa held in Edgbaston was a result of a thinking captain who never gave up. Field restrictions adopted by the ICC aimed at improving balance between the two teams. Power plays continued to be in the game while the super sub moved away from the scene. The format during Feb-Mar 2011 world cup is pretty much similar to the one we had in 1996 where two teams of the same group played each other once before going to the quarterfinal stage. ICC decides to increase the number of sides from the 2007 edition besides retaining all the Test playing nations. ICC has to take a considerable time before settling down to the implementation of the Power Plays (PP). Both teams have an initial 10 over period, termination of whose period would mean that each team has one PP of a maximum 5 over period to choose in the remaining 40 over period. During power play the fielding side has to deploy 3 men outside 30 yard circle and two men in close catching positions (Initial PP allows only two outside 30 yard circle). World Cup in India after 15 years….. The Wills World Cup 1996 held in the subcontinent is considered as the trendsetter because it opened flood gates for sponsors to dictate the game much like an Oxford Economics professor did to the Indian economy way back in 1991. Jagmohan Dalmiya, president of the PILCOM was a proud mascot when he successfully organized the opening ceremony of the world cup that accounted for almost Rs. 4 cr at Eden Gardens. The 1992 limited over international (LOI) world cup in Australasia…

ICC Champions Trophy 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009. CT 2013. ICC, please think it over.

Update June 24, 2015.  Champions Trophy has been retained for the reasons best known to the ICC. The success of the last edition seems to have had positive impact on the decision makers of game, and with England and Wales Cricket Board preparing itself to organize the big ticket edition the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019 after CT 2017 cricket’s passionate lovers can really expect fireworks as one fondly remembers the resurgence of a tiring Australian side on the back of game changing performances from Steve Waugh and Shane Warne in the super sixes and semi final.  2004 Champions Trophy had produced classic thrillers as a stubborn Pakistani side surpassed a gutsy special from Dravid-Agarkar and a fiery first spell from Irfan Pathan. Edgbaston in Birmingham had lived up to its reputation of being one of game’s thriller producers after The Gabba and the WACA in Australia, and Chepauk in Madras. For the most part in the final, England looked like it would have the crown 12 years after its major title clash appearance at the MCG in 1992 when Wasim Akram took the game away from them. But West Indies thought otherwise with a calypso to stun the world!  June 19, 2013 This is the most exciting cricketing venue ever. This is England and Wales. With England lying in the north temperate zone and westerlies being a major factor in consistent rainfall, the tracks here help bowlers who can swing. Adding to this is if the moisture goes off, batsmen need to contend bounce from genuine faster bowlers. The temperatures here are just around 20-25 degree Celsius. This is why sub continental teams face opposition not just from the opponent but from the fickle minded climate as well. Greener surfaces that encourage swing, aided by humid conditions, sometimes by cool breeze, like in Birmingham, are ideal conditions for testing a batsman’s back foot and stroke making ability. In the latter part of Summer, one eventually feels the surfaces are long separated brothers of Indian surfaces with added dust. This makes it ideal for practicing reverse swing, the art best known to Pakistani medium pacers like Imran Khan, Aquib Javed, Ata-Ur-Rehman, and Wasim Akram, as reverse swing operates exceedingly well with the help of humidity. Battle between ball and bat, ball and pad, pad and bat keeps a keen cricket lover on his toes here as the wickets are conducive to genuine swingers.  ICC champions Trophy 2013 in England and Wales is the last edition. For the first time in 2004, England hosted the event, touted as fiddler to regular One-Day World Cup held after every four years.
